Worker confidence fell in December, according to Spherion Corp.'s (NYSE: SFN) employee confidence index. The gauge dropped 0.9 of a point to 52.0 in December, its lowest level in 2007.

The percentage of employees who felt the economy was getting stronger was unchanged at 12%, while the number who believed more jobs are available fell to 19% from 20% in November. However, the percentage of workers confident in the future of their employer rose to 64% in December from 61% in November.

"With the continuing turmoil in the housing and credit markets and concerns of an overall slowing in the economy, it's not surprising that the employee confidence index has continued its decline," said Spherion President and CEO Roy Krause. December's "index reached its lowest level in the past year, but not all of the data is negative. In fact, the majority of workers remain confident about their own job security and the future of their current employer."

The index's survey questioned 2,827 working adults.
