West Virginia posts highest jobless rate in May

West Virginia posted the highest unemployment rate among all states in May at 7.2%, according to data released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nevada followed at 7.0%, while Alaska and South Carolina both had unemployment rates of 6.8%. The District of Columbia had a rate of 7.3%.

Nebraska posted the lowest unemployment rate in May at 2.6%.

The national jobless rate was 5.5% in May, essentially unchanged from April and 0.8 percentage points lower than in May 2014.
