US jobless claims average falls by 3,750

The U.S. four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 3,750 in the week ended June 14 to 311,750 from the previous week’s revised figure of 315,500, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week fell by 6,000 to a total of 312,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised figure of 318,000.

MarketWatch reports the average of new claims over the past month is just a hair above a seven-year low.

California reported the largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 7, adding 9,935. It was followed by Florida (up 4,050), Illinois (up 3,248), Georgia (up 2,997), and Pennsylvania (up 2,909). The largest decreases were in New Mexico (down 332), Nebraska (down 162), Alaska (down 109), Kansas (down 49), and North Dakota (down 30).
