US is tech leader, according to Modis survey

October 13, 2015

Most Americans, 60.9%, agree that the US is a global technology leader, according to a tech perceptions survey released today by Modis, an information technology staffing division of Adecco SA. And among respondents who agreed that the US is a global tech leader, almost 80% said this leadership will continue for the next five years. Among those who disagreed, 56.5% cited a lack of quality education as the reason contributing to the US not being a global leader in the technology industry.

The research surveyed consumer perceptions and attitudes about technology job growth, most desirable job benefits and willingness to relocate, among other IT employment-focused themes.

Healthcare was by far the industry most respondents felt would have the greatest need for tech talent in the next five years. Survey participants were asked, “Which industry do you think will have the greatest need for increased technology talent in the next five years?”

Responses include:

  • Healthcare: 46.0%
  • Education: 16.1%
  • Government: 13.4%
  • Utilities: 8.8%
  • Finance: 7.6%
  • Other: 4.3%
  • Retail: 3.8%

The survey also found 61.4% would be willing to relocate within the US for a position with a higher salary, with the Northwest region being most desirable and the Mid-Atlantic region being the least desirable location. Among those willing to relocate, the largest group — 35.0% — indicated they would expect a salary increase of 20% to 29% after agreeing to relocate, followed by 27.6% who would expect an increase of 40% or greater.

About half, 50.1%, cited flexible work hours as the most desirable job perk, followed by unlimited vacation time with 21.0%.

The survey was conducted by Allison+Partners Research+Insights using the Qualtrics Research Suite platform. It included a nationally representative sample 1,010 individuals in the US, representing a variety of industries ranging from healthcare and educational services to finance and retail.
