Switzerland – Jobs in German-speaking regions rise, as French-speaking regions report declines

26 August 2015

There were 2% more jobs advertised in Switzerland in August, the first national increase since February 2015. However, the gap between the number of jobs advertised in German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland widened, according to the latest figures from Michael Page.

The number of jobs advertised in German-Switzerland rose by 3%, while French-Switzerland reported a decline of 5% between 15 July and 15 August 2015, compared with the same period the previous month.

All of the German-speaking cantons reported an increase in job advertisements, while all but two of the French-speaking cantons reported declines.

The highest growth rate in jobs adverts was reported in logistics, which increased by 18% compared with the previous month. The commercial sector reported an increase of 8%, while there was a 5% increase in demand for engineers. The pharmaceutical industry reported advert growth of 3% during the month.

Charles Franier, Executive Director at Michael Page, commented: “The labour market is changing. The transformation is particularly clear in the industrial segment. Companies are reorganising their production operations – a process that was triggered by the strong franc.”

“It is gratifying that Swiss companies are looking to retain as many jobs as possible in Switzerland in the area of production. This has resulted in a change in the nature of the jobs advertised. The locations, too, vary,” he added.
