Survey: Workers not optimistic about economy

August 25, 2010

A majority of workers aren't very optimistic about the economy and they don't feel very secure in their jobs two years after the start of the recession, according to the 2010 Labor Day survey by Spherion Staffing Services, part of SFN Group Inc. (NYSE: SFN).

The survey found that 60% of workers said they are not optimistic about the future of the economy, 62% feel less secure about their jobs compared to a year ago and 37% feel more negative toward their jobs since the start of the recession.

Twenty-seven percent agreed with the statement "I dislike what I am doing and I am actively looking for a new job."

"This study is a vivid reminder to U.S. employers that workers have paid a hefty price during the recession, and old wounds take a long time to heal," said Loretta Penn, president of Spherion Staffing Services. "We may see an enduring toll on workers' optimism, outlook and overall satisfaction for years to come."

The survey took place between July 15 and July 28 and included 896 working adults in the U.S.
