Survey: Health plan costs to rise

October 13, 2010

Costs for employer-provided healthcare benefits will rise by more than 10% in 2011, according to a survey of more than 120 insurers and administrators by Buck Consultants, a division of the Xerox Company.

Preferred provider organization costs are expected to rise by 11.6%, point-of-service plans costs will rise by 11.3%, health maintenance organization plans will rise by 10.6% and costs for high deductible health plans will rise by 11.3%.

"The trend factors reported in our survey reflect, in part, that health insurers anticipate higher claim costs under healthcare reform," said Harvey Sobel, a Buck principal and consulting actuary who directed the survey. "Also, due to current economic uncertainty, insurers may be projecting higher claim costs because employees who remain after layoffs tend to be older and more expensive to insure."
