Spherion worker confidence index edges up

December 08, 2008

Spherion Corp.'s (NYSE: SFN) employee confidence index edged up in November after falling to a new low in October. The index's November reading was 42.0, up 0.5 points from the previous month.

The index's survey found that 73% of workers said the economy was getting weaker, compared with 77% in the previous month. In addition, 66% of U.S. workers said they were confident in the future of their current employer, up one percentage point from October.

The survey also found that 35% of workers are likely to a look for a new job in the next 12 months, up four percentage points from October.

"As headlines point out, the economy is clearly facing some tremendous challenges. It is encouraging, however, to see some good news in the form of a slight increase in U.S. workers' confidence," said Roy Krause, president and CEO of Spherion Corp. "The election of a new administration and the provision of initial solutions to the turmoil in the markets may have contributed to this uptick in confidence."

The index's survey questioned 2,805 U.S. workers.
