The Providence-Fall River-Warwick area in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California posted the highest unemployment rates in March — both at 9.4 percent — among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area in Texas, had the lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas at 4.4 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 22.5 percent in March. El Centro, Calif., followed with an unemployment rate of 21.4 percent. Midland, Texas posted the lowest unemployment rate at 2.7 percent.
