Randstad confidence index high despite slowdown in US job growth

October 13, 2015

The outlook among American workers as measured by Randstad’s US employee confidence index was little changed in the third quarter and remains exceptionally high. The index edged down slightly to a reading of 61.8 in the third quarter from 61.9 in the second quarter, remaining near record highs throughout 2015.

The index measures workers’ confidence in their personal employment situation and optimism about the economic environment. It’s based on a survey 2,097 employed US workers conducted in July and September.

Randstad reported 33% of workers believe more jobs are available and 54% indicate they are confident in their ability to find a new job.

The index indicates a steady confidence level among US workers despite slower economic and employment growth in recent months. The workers’ personal confidence index, a measure of workers' confidence in their own employment situation, increased to 72.1 in the third quarter from 71.3 in the second quarter.

“The labor market is a mixed bag at the moment, with some industries experiencing significant headwinds and others adding new jobs at a healthy pace,” said Jim Link, chief HR officer, Randstad North America. “For example, issues continue to plague the oil industry, resulting in big losses within the mining, logging and manufacturing industries. However, we see steady hiring activity within the healthcare, professional and business services, information technology and financial sectors.”
