Online job ads rise

October 01, 2007

The number of U.S. jobs posted online rose 4.0%, or 165,200, to almost 4.3 million in September, according to The Conference Board's online help-wanted advertising survey. Total ads rose 17.5% year-over-year in September.

New online ads — those which didn't appear in the previous month — rose 6% to approximately 2.9 million in September. The number of new ads year-over-year rose 22.6%.

"The growth rate in the number of online ads has moderated in recent months from what we were seeing in early 2007 and some of the growth is reflective of the continued shift to online advertising," said Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board.

"Looking regionally, the more 'mature' areas in terms of Internet usage, like the West and East coasts, where online job advertising has been popular for some time, the rate of growth has slowed," Levanon said. "In many of the smaller metro areas, and where online job advertising has lagged behind the largest metro areas, the growth rates continue to be very strong."
