Missing Administaff laptop held sensitive data

October 16, 2007

Professional employer organization Administaff Inc. (NYSE: ASF) said it's missing a laptop computer that contained personal information on 63,000 current worksite employees and 96,000 former employees. Information included names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The Houston-based company is offering affected workers one year of free credit reporting services with fraud resolution assistance and a toll-free help line.

The laptop was password protected, however the personal information wasn't saved in an encrypted location, which is in violation of company policy, Administaff said.

"We deeply regret that this incident occurred," said Chairman and CEO Paul Sarvadi. "While we have no evidence to suggest the information stored on the computer has been accessed or misused, we are taking precautionary measures to ensure that the affected individuals have resources available to protect themselves."
