Memphis area posts highest jobless rate

The Memphis, Tenn., metropolitan area posted the highest jobless rates in May among large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more at 9.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Minneapolis area posted the lowest jobless rate among all large metropolitan areas at 4.7 percent.

Among areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., and El Centro, Calif., areas recorded the highest unemployment rates in May at 30.8 percent and 22.8 percent, respectively. Bismarck, N.D., registered the lowest unemployment rate among all U.S. metropolitan areas at 2.4 percent.
