Median earnings of US workers up 3.3% in Q4

January 22, 2016

Median weekly earnings of US full-time wage and salary workers rose 3.3% year over year in the fourth quarter to $825 (not seasonally adjusted), the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced today.

Women who usually worked full time had median weekly earnings of $729, or 80.4% of the $907 median for men, according to the report for the fourth quarter. In the third quarter report, women who usually worked full time had median weekly earnings of $721, or 81.1% of the $889 median for men.

“Circular conversations won't shift the needle and achieve parity of opportunity for women in leadership roles,” said ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) Chairman and CEO Jonas Prising. “The business case has been proven, it’s time for businesses to get practical. Leaders must commit to driving cultural change in their organizations, enabling and encouraging all women to fulfill their potential. We need to look beyond the percentages of women in the workforce and understand where they are and what they're doing.  Appointing more women into P&L roles, for example, will be critical.”

Prising today participates in the “Progress Towards Parity” panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. Other panelists include Melinda Gates, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook; Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada; and Zhang Xin, Soho China.

For workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher, the median was $1,245; for workers with only a high school diploma, the median was $690. Workers age 25 and older without a high school diploma had median weekly earnings of $502.

Among college graduates with advanced degrees — professional or master’s degree and above — the highest-earning 10% of male workers made $3,878 or more per week in the fourth quarter, compared with $2,486 or more for their female counterparts.

Among occupations, workers in the management, professional, and related occupations posted the highest median weekly earnings at $1,423 for men and $1,010 for women. Earnings were lowest in service jobs, with median earnings of $607 for men and $471 for women.
