Mass Layoffs, Claims Rise in October

The number of mass layoff events — where 50 or more workers are laid off from a single workplace — increased by 44 to 1,360 in October from September, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initial claims for unemployment insurance caused by mass layoff events rose by 8,709 October for a total of 131,173.

“Temporary help services” was the industry with the most initial claims due to mass layoff events in October with 12,955 initial claims, according to numbers that were not seasonally adjusted.
