Jobless claims jump by 13,000

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance filed in the week ended Oct. 9 rose by 13,000 compared with the previous week, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Initial claims for the week ended Oct. 9 totaled 462,000, up 2.9% from the previous week's number of 449,000 -- which had been revised up by 4,000.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended Oct. 9 rose to 459,000, up 2,250, or 0.5%, from the previous week's revised average of 456,750.
