Jobless claims fall by 8,000

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended Jan. 23 fell by 8,000, or 1.7%, to 470,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 478,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

The four-week moving average of claims for the week ended Jan. 23 rose by 9,500, or 2.1%, to 456,250 from the previous week's revised average of 446,750.
