Job board reports openings up 29% over year

U.S. job openings edged up by 0.2 percent in August and year-over-year job openings increased 29.1 percent, according to Simply Hired’s May 2013 Employment Outlook released today. Retail was among the top industries in terms of job growth, indicating the beginning of seasonal hiring, while healthcare continued to count the most available job openings.

Job openings increased in 24 of 50 major metro areas in August. Pittsburgh; Austin, Texas; and Minneapolis experienced the largest gains at 12.2 percent, 6.8 percent and 5.5 percent respectively.

Job openings increased in 16 out of 18 industries in August. Transportation at 25.8 percent and retail at 12.1 percent showed the largest gains, while agriculture posted the largest decrease during the month, falling 14.3 percent.
