Helmet firm, staffing company agree to penalties in worker’s fatal fall

June 12, 2015

A worker at a Bell Sports Inc. facility in Rantoul, Ill., died Oct. 22 after falling 30 feet onto a concrete floor, according to OSHA documents. This month, Bell and Kelly Services Inc. (NASD: KELYA) agreed to pay penalties of $7,000 each related to the incident.

OSHA cited the plant for no guardrail or other suitable fall protection system, according to OSHA documents. The worker had been at the site for about a month and was working through Kelly Services. The worker was performing housekeeping activities on the third floor of an automated conveyor line when the fall took place.

OSHA issued citations on April 20, but the settlements took place this month. In addition to the financial penalty, the citation also called for the violation to be corrected.

Bell is a brand of BRG Sports, a marketer of sports equipment, including football and bicycle helmets. Its other brands include Riddell, Giro and Blackburn. The company is based in Scotts Valley, Calif.
