Germany – Cautious attitude to recruitment persists

30 July 2014

German companies are still looking for staff, but remain fairly cautious about recruiting, according to the latest Employment Barometer from the Institute for Economic Research (Ifo). The index remained unchanged at 106 in July compared with June 2014. However the index was up against 105.7 in July 2013.

The employment environment remains fairly sluggish, with the services sector being the industry showing the greatest willingness to recruit.

The employment barometer again dipped slightly for the manufacturing industry. As a result of growing uncertainty, manufacturers are adopting a wait-and-see approach in their search for new recruits. For the construction sector, the employment barometer also reported a slight drop, with only a few isolated companies still looking to recruit new staff, predominately in distribution.
