Gannett to include CareerBuilder in new company

September 04, 2014

Gannett Co. Inc., which is a majority owner of jobs site CareerBuilder, is moving ahead with a plan to separate its digital and broadcasting business from its newspaper business. Gannett announced the proposed split last month. In addition to CareerBuilder, Gannett’s digital business includes a portion of automotive website Cars.com and other Web properties. Gannett also announced Wednesday it received federal regulatory clearance to acquire the 73 percent ownership of Cars.com it did not already own.

CareerBuilder is based in Chicago, and it’s 52.9 percent owned by Gannett, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The separate broadcasting and digital company, which also includes 46 television stations the company owns or services, will remain headquartered in McLean, Va. and trade on the NYSE. Gannett expects the split to be in place by mid 2015, according to a filing with the SEC.

Gannett’s publishing division will include its newspapers such as USA Today.
