France – Engineers and consultants see the largest pay increase

02 September 2015

Pay for professionals and managers in France rose by 1.2% in the first half 2015, compared with the same period last year, according to a report published by Expectra, a subsidiary of Randstad. Research and development (R&D) engineers and consultants recorded the largest increase over the same period (4%).

This latest figure shows the market is improving, compared to pay increases of 0.5% and 0.9% in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Pay for professionals and managers rebounded strongly in 2011 and 2012 (+ 2.4%) after two years of decline in 2009 (-1.6%) and 2010 (-1.9%).

The survey was based on actual wages gathered from nearly 69,000 payslips in 2015. According to Christophe Bougeard CEO of Expectra, "a detailed analysis of the wage increase for professionals and managers indicates employers are gaining confidence." He adds that the wage increase in R&D "indicates a desire to prime the pump for investment which, if spread to the rest of the economy in the medium term should benefit all professionals and managers," he added.

The study carried out this year in partnership with the job site RegionsJob shows some disparities between regions. The Ile-de-France remains the most attractive region with an average increase of 2%, because of a "war for talent forcing companies to offer significant increases despite the precautionary context." Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur comes next (+ 1.9%), followed by the North (1.8%).

However, the increase was much lower than the national average in the Southwest (+ 0.6%), Rhône-Alpes (+ 0.5%); while salaries were stable in the Northeast.
