Employment rises in Canada

Employment in Canada rose by more than 46,000 jobs month-over-month in January with employment at more than 17.0 million, Statistics Canada reported today. Employment was up 2.0% year-over-year in January.

In addition, the Canadian unemployment rate was 5.8% in January, down from 6.0% in December. January's unemployment rate matched the 33-year low reached in October.

Employment in Ontario rose 0.2% month-over-month in January to more than 6.64 million. Ontario's unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in January from 6.5% in December. Gains in service industries were partially offset by losses in manufacturing and accommodation and food services, according to Statistics Canada.

Alberta continued to have the lowest unemployment rate among provinces at 3.2% in January, unchanged from December. Quebec's unemployment rate fell to 6.8% in January, a 33-year low for the province.
