Employers may pay under new health proposal

February 22, 2010

President Barack Obama unveiled a proposal today for healthcare reform, and employers who don't offer health insurance could have to pay, according to an overview of the proposal. The New York Times reports Obama's proposal is similar to the Senate plan.

Employers with less than 50 employees would not pay an assessment, according to the overview. However, those with more than 50 employees would have to pay $2,000 per employee, but details were still sketchy at press time on how that amount might be divided by time worked. Companies could subtract an amount equal to the first 30 employees from the payment. In addition, employers wouldn't pay an assessment during a waiting period, but the waiting period is limited to 90 days. The time limit on the waiting period would begin in 2014.

Obama scheduled a bipartisan meeting for Thursday to discuss healthcare reform.
