EEOC: Discrimination Charges Fall

The number of private sector workplace discrimination charges in the U.S. fell in federal fiscal year 2012 compared to the previous year, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported. The agency received 99,412 charges in 2012 compared to 99,947 in the previous year.

Charges of retaliation were the most numerous at 37,836 and made up 38.1 percent of all charges, according to the EEOC. Race discrimination charges ranked as the second-most common with 33,512 and 33.7 percent of charges. Sex discrimination charges followed with 30,356 and 30.5 percent of all charges.

The EEOC reported it recovered $365.4 million from employers through its administrative process in 2012 — the highest amount ever. It also recovered $44.2 million in lawsuits.
