Detroit posts highest jobless rate in July

The Detroit metropolitan area posted the highest jobless rate in July, 15.2%, among all large U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California recorded the second-highest rate at 15.1%.

Las Vegas, which posted the highest rate in May and June, registered a jobless rate of 14.8% in July.

Washington DC turned in the lowest unemployment rate among all large metropolitan areas in July at 6.3%. It was followed by the Oklahoma City area at 6.4%.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro CA posted the highest jobless rate in July at 30.3%. Of the 17 metropolitan areas with unemployment rates of at least 15.0%, 12 were located in California.

The Bismarck ND area posted the lowest jobless rate among all metropolitan areas in July at 3.1%.
