Canadian employment cools slightly

Employment in Canada edged down by 5,000 jobs in June, remaining roughly flat, with total employment at around 17.1 million, Statistics Canada reported today. The country lost 39,200 full-time jobs, but gained 34,200 part-time jobs.

In Ontario, employment fell by almost 24,000 jobs in June, according to Statistics Canada. However, employment in the province is still up by 1.7% over the last 12 months.

The nationwide unemployment rate rose to 6.2% in June from 6.1% in May.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among provinces in June at 3.3%, down from 3.6% in May.
