Canadian Employment Insurance holds steady

The number of people receiving Canadian Employment Insurance benefits in April was little changed from March, Statistics Canada reported today. There were 667,380 people receiving Employment Insurance in April, down slightly from the 667,910 in March.

However, the number of people receiving Employment Insurance benefits is down 19.5% from its peak of 829,300 in June 2009.

In Ontario, the number of people receiving Employment Insurance was 210,720 in April, up 2,580 from March.

The number of initial and renewal Employment Insurance claims in April was also little changed, falling to 227,790 in April from 228,360 in March.

Employment Insurance provides financial assistance for unemployed workers.
