Canada loses 9,300 jobs

Canada lost 9,300 jobs in July with total employment at 17.18 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada.

A loss in full-time jobs of 139,000 was partially offset by a gain of 129,700 part-time jobs.

The Canadian unemployment rate edged up to 8.0% in July from 7.9% in June.

Ontario lost approximately 15,000 jobs in July. The province lost 30,000 full-time jobs but gained 14,800 part-time jobs. Ontario's jobless rate rose to 8.5% in July from 8.3% in June.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest jobless rate among all provinces at 5.1%.
