Canada Employment Flat

Canadian employment was relatively unchanged in October with the number of jobs rising by only 1,800 for a total of 17.6 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 7,300, but part-time jobs fell by 5,500.

The Canadian unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.4 percent in October from September.

Ontario lost 9,900 jobs in October. The province added 29,900 full-time jobs but lost 39,800 part-time jobs. The unemployment rate for the province increased to 8.3 percent in October compared to 7.9 percent in September.

Alberta posted the lowest unemployment rates among all provinces in October at 4.5 percent.
