California area posts highest jobless rate

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California posted the highest unemployment rates in April — 8.3 percent — among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area in Texas and Oklahoma City, Okla., posted the lowest jobless rates among large metropolitan areas, both at 3.8 percent.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 23.8 percent in April. El Centro, Calif., followed with an unemployment rate of 21.6 percent. Midland, Texas posted the lowest unemployment rate at 2.3 percent.
