Calian Staffing Division Revenue Up 4%

May 10, 2012

Calian Technologies Ltd. (TSX: CTY) reported revenue rose 3.5 percent year over year to C$45.5 million (US$45.6 million) in its business and technology services segment during the company’s fiscal second quarter ended March 31. The segment provides technical and professional staffing and other services, and the firm ranks as Canada’s 10th-largest staffing firm. Calian’s other division, the systems engineering division, includes nonstaffing operations.

“The BTS division continues to cope with a very competitive landscape, but I am encouraged by the relatively small falloff in margins compared to the prior year,” said President and CEO Ray Basler.

Revenue in the segment includes revenue from the acquisition of Primacy Management Inc., a provider of management services to medical clinics. Calian acquired the firm on March 1.

Total second-quarter revenue at the company rose 3.7 percent to C$61.6 million (US$61.8 million). Gross margin improved to 18.7 percent from 17.7 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Calian posted net income of C$3.67 million (US$3.68 million), up 12.8 percent from the same period in the previous year.
