Agency: Client to pay after staffing firm doesn't

September 01, 2010

Safeway Inc., an operator of grocery stores, agreed to fund payments to workers left unpaid by a staffing firm, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries announced Tuesday. The bureau said it received four wage claims in July and August totaling almost $6,000.

The workers, employed by California-based Aptitude Staffing Solutions, had worked at a Safeway site in Clackamas OR.

Aptitude didn't respond to letters from the bureau demanding that it pay wages or present evidence the wages are not owed, according to the bureau.

Aptitude Staffing could not immediately be reached for comment on the bureau's announcement.

The staffing firm could still face civil penalties for failure to pay wages and failure to cooperate with the investigation, according to the bureau.

The Bureau of Labor and Industries "may not be done with Aptitude Staffing," said Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian. "Right now, we are happy to see our No. 1 priority, ensuring that these employees get paid, has been achieved."
