Workers split on fair pay: Robert Half

August 28, 2018

On the bright side, almost half of professionals surveyed by global staffing firm Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI) feel they are paid fairly at their jobs. However, on the flip side, about half also think they are underpaid.

The survey found 49% think they are “paid fairly,” and 46% think they are “underpaid.” Five percent reported they are “overpaid.”

San Diego had the most workers who feel underpaid at 62%, followed by Austin at 54%; Houston and Nashville, both at 53%; and Philadelphia at 52%.

Miami had the fewest professionals who report being underpaid at 33%; it was followed by Dallas and New York, both at 37%.

Fifty-two percent of workers ages 55 and older think they are compensated fairly; this compares with 44% of those ages 18 to 34 and 51% of those ages 35 to 54.

Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half, noted reasons why pay levels may not feel up to par. “Some firms have not kept up with shifts in market demand and continue to use old job classifications and salary bands,” McDonald said. “If your organization has not reviewed its compensation plan within the last six months, it could be outdated.”

The survey included more than 2,800 workers in 28 US markets. The research was issued in conjunction with the release of the Robert Half 2019 Salary Guides.
