What's the hottest summer perk?

May 22, 2017

Employees want flexible schedules and summer Fridays, but fewer companies offer them, according to the results of a survey released by OfficeTeam, a division of Robert Half International Inc. (NYSE: RHI).

When asked which summertime benefit they would most like to have, 39% of respondents said they're most interested in flexible schedules and 30% cited the ability to leave early on Fridays.

The responses:

  • Flexible schedules: 39%
  • Leave early on Fridays: 30%
  • More relaxed dress code: 18%
  • Activities like company picnic or potluck: 10%

But companies have cooled off on providing these benefits. HR managers were asked, "Which, if any, of the following summer benefits are offered at your company?" Their responses:

  • Flexible schedules: 62%, down from 75% in a similar survey in 2012
  • More relaxed dress code: 29%, down from 57%
  • Leave early on Fridays: 20%, down from 63%
  • Activities like company picnic or potluck: 17%, down from 28%

HR managers also identified the most common negative employee behaviors at this time of year :

  • Not planning well for vacations: 32%
  • Unexpected absences: 22%
  • Dressing too casually: 19%
  • Sneaking in late or leaving early: 15%
  • Being mentally checked out: 12%

“It’s natural for employees to get distracted when the weather’s nice and thoughts turn to plans outside the office, said Brandi Britton, a district president for OfficeTeam. “But savvy companies maintain staff productivity and morale by embracing summer in the workplace. Letting employees modify their schedules, leave early on Fridays or dress more casually when it's hot out are easy ways to keep them loyal and engaged.”

OfficeTeam developed the survey, which was conducted by an independent research firm. It included responses from 380 US adult workers employed in office environments, as well as 300 HR managers at US companies with 20 or more employees.
