Wage growth accelerates for first time in six months; recruiters’ median base pay rises 5%

August 30, 2017

US wage growth accelerated slightly in August, ending a six-month stretch of deceleration, according to data from Glassdoor.

The annual median base pay in the US grew 2.0% year over year in August to $51,556, up from the 1.7% revised pay growth in July and the first acceleration since US pay growth peaked at 3.1% in January.

“We will be watching eagerly to see if this starts a trend in the opposite direction,” said Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist of Glassdoor. “We are also closely watching retail, and while the holiday season is still months away, retailers are already making preparations to fill short-term positions in time for the holiday buying rush. Jobs typically associated with this seasonal swing in hiring, including cashiers and warehouse jobs, are seeing above-average pay growth.”

As the economy nears full employment, employers today are relying more on passive job candidates, and that’s putting skilled recruiters in high demand. Recruiters continued to post strong pay gains in August, with wages up 5.2% year over year to a median base pay of $50,483.

Truck drivers have consistently been among the jobs with the fastest rise in pay growth in recent months and topped the list in August, up 5.7% to $52,079.

“We continue to see pay growth rise for truck drivers, in part because of increased demand for the rapid transport of consumer retail goods that have been purchased online.” Chamberlain said. “While there is some concern that in the future self-driving trucks may negatively impact truck driver jobs, it’s not happening today, and there is still a high demand for actual people in the driver’s seat.”

  • Truck driver: up 5.7% to $52,079
