Uber presses challenge to California AB 5 independent contractor law (Courthouse News Service)

July 14, 2022

Uber Technologies Inc. continues to challenge AB 5, a California law that aims to get tough on independent contractor misclassification, Courthouse News Service reported. Uber lawyers appeared before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday to press the company’s case. AB 5 drew concerns when approved because it could prohibit the firm’s practice of classifying drivers as ICs. The law was overridden when California voters approved Proposition 22, allowing online ride sharing and deliver companies to continue classifying their drivers as independent contractors; however, a judge last year ruled Prop. 22 unconstitutional.
