Uber president is latest exec to leave firm

March 20, 2017

Uber Technologies Inc.’s President Jeff Jones left the human cloud firm, according to media reports. Jones assumed the role in August and was responsible for Uber’s operations, marketing and customer support globally.

Prior to joining the ride-sharing firm, Jones was chief marketing officer at Target Corp.

“I joined Uber because of its mission, and the challenge to build global capabilities that would help the company mature and thrive long term,” Jones said in a statement to Reuters. “It is now clear, however, that the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber, and I can no longer continue as president of the ride sharing business,”

In addition, Brian McClendon, VP of maps and business platform at Uber, will also leave the firm after close to two years. Uber said McClendon’s departure was entirely amicable and has been in the works for months.

“After 30 years away, I've decided to move back to my hometown of Lawrence, Kansas,” he said in a statement Uber provided to Staffing Industry Analysts. “My roots there run deep and traveling back a few times a year no longer seems like enough. This fall’s election and the current fiscal crisis in Kansas is driving me to more fully participate in our democracy — and I want to do that in the place I call home. I believe in Uber's mission and the many talented people working there to make it a reality and that’s why I have agreed to stay on as an advisor.”

Recode reports McClendon’s is the latest in a series of departures from the company, which has been shaken by recent accusations of sexual harassment, leading CEO Travis Kalanick to admit he needs to “grow up” and commit to hiring a chief operating officer.
