Tech occupations throughout the US economy shed 210,000 jobs in November, according to CompTIA’s analysis of data from the US Bureau of Statistics released Friday.

The analysis noted that job postings for tech hiring totaled 155,621 for the month. In November, positions that require emerging tech skills accounted for 26% of tech job postings.

Companies in the tech services and software development sector added nearly 2,900 jobs in November. This segment has experienced employment growth in nine out of the 11 months in 2023.

Overall, 99.9% of companies in the tech services and software development sector are classified as small and medium-sized businesses, accounting for 84% of employment in the tech services and software sector.

In addition, 12% of the total job postings are for positions associated with artificial intelligence, reflecting more than 18,000 postings. CompTIA reported AI positions have surpassed the 10% threshold for the first time.

"With the gains in employer hiring intent for AI talent, the job posting data is finally catching up to the hype,” Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA, said in a press release. “As an enabling technology, companies hiring for AI skills inevitably need to boost adjacencies in areas such as data infrastructure, cybersecurity and business process automation.”

Among states, California, Texas and Virginia had the highest volumes of tech job postings at 15,193, 14,403 and 10,103, respectively, while Washington, New York, Dallas and Chicago led metropolitan markets.

Across industries, the largest number of job postings occurred in professional, scientific and technical services, administrative and support, manufacturing, finance and insurance and information.
