US nonmanufacturing activity accelerates slightly in November but employment metric slips

December 06, 2018

Economic activity in the US nonmanufacturing sector accelerated slightly in November, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing index, released today.

ISM’s nonmanufacturing index edged up to a reading of 60.7 in November from a reading of 60.3 in October.

Readings above 50 generally indicate improving conditions.

However, the employment portion of the index decreased in November to a reading of 58.4 from October’s reading of 59.7. Fourteen industries reported increased _employment, and two industries — utilities and public administration — reported decreased employment.

Comments from respondents include: “Increased business activity has necessitated more direct employees; no change in nondirect employees,” and “ramping up for new business and filling previously vacant positions.”
