US hiring growth shows possible early signs of leveling off: LinkedIn

October 08, 2018

US hiring growth shows early signs of leveling off after rising at a decent clip through most of 2017 and 2018, according to LinkedIn’s October Workforce Report. Gross hiring in the US edged down 1.1% year over year in September; seasonally adjusted national hiring remained steady, with no change from August 2018. This may be an early sign of growth leveling off, according to the company.

Nashville; Charlotte, NC; and Las Vegas surpassed Seattle as top cities gaining workers. Overall, Austin, Denver and Nashville are the US cities that gained the most workers in September. Nashville, Charlotte and Las Vegas — ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively — sprung past Seattle, which fell from the top spot to No. 6 on the list.

LinkedIn noted Seattle is now witnessing similar challenges as the San Francisco Bay Area: huge talent inflows combined with limited housing supply are restricting affordability and slowing migration growth. Conversely, Nashville, Charlotte and Las Vegas have strong job opportunities coupled with more affordable housing markets.

New York ranked as the city with the largest skills gap, followed by the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, respectively. The same locales also the greatest shortages across all skills.

The LinkedIn Workforce Report is a monthly report on employment trends in the US workforce, highlighting workforce trends in the US and across 20 cities. Insights include whether hiring is up, down or flat; which skills cities need most; and where workers are moving to and from.
