Trump tweets plan to change H-1B system, discusses path to citizenship

January 11, 2019

US President Donald Trump plans changes to the H-1B visa system that include a possible path to citizenship. The president announced his intentions on his Twitter feed early this morning.

“H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship,” President Trump tweeted. “We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the US.”

It is unclear what the president meant exactly, CBS News reported, as simplifying a path to citizenship for such visa holders would almost certainly require approval from Congress, and the White House has made no such suggestion in its latest border security funding proposal. Reuters reported H-1B visa holders are already eligible to be sponsored by their employers for legal permanent residency, which would make them eligible to become US citizens.
