TrueBlue names new CFO to take over from longtime exec

October 10, 2023

TrueBlue Inc. (NYSE: TBI), the fifth-largest industrial staffing firm, promoted Carl Schweihs to CFO effective Oct. 30. Schweihs will take over the CFO position from Derrek Gafford, who is leaving the company after nearly 20 years to pursue other opportunities. The move follows TrueBlue’s Aug. 15 announcement that Taryn Owen was promoted to president and CEO.

Gafford will serve in an advisory capacity through the end of the year.

Schweihs joined TrueBlue as part of its acquisition of Seaton in 2014. He currently is president and COO of the company’s PeopleManagement division. Prior to TrueBlue, Schweihs served in a variety of leadership roles at Seaton and Grant Thornton.

“I am confident that his wealth of experience and alignment with our company’s strategic vision make him the right person to lead our finance organization forward as we continue to evolve,” Owen said in a press release.

Gafford has served as CFO since 2005; he joined the company in 2002, according to a regulatory filing. Prior to TrueBlue, he served as CFO for grocery retailer Metropolitan Market and held management positions at Deloitte & Touche LLP and Albertsons Inc.

“It has been an exciting and rewarding journey at TrueBlue, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished together,” Gafford said in a press release.

In conjunction with Schweihs’ appointment as CFO, Jerry Wimer has been promoted to general manager of PeopleManagement’s on-site staffing business and will serve as acting president of PeopleManagement. Wimer has been with TrueBlue since the acquisition of Seaton, most recently serving as general manager and senior VP of global operations for Staff Management | SMX.
