Three-quarters of US workers don’t fear automation, Randstad US finds

July 18, 2017

Three-quarters of US workers, 76%, do not fear automation, according to research released today by Randstad US. Contrary to other reports, the 2017 Randstad Employer Brand Research found that only 14% of US employees worry that automation will take their job away, and 30% said they think automation will make their job better.

Workers also reported a willingness to retrain or upskill to maintain their current job status, with 51% of the respondents agreeing they would be happy to retrain if they were being paid the same or more than their current salary.

“It is evident from our research that not only are workers not afraid of losing their jobs to automation, they are more than willing to retrain to leverage the efficiencies and benefits of artificial intelligence and robotics in the workplace,” Randstad North America CEO Linda Galipeau said. “These sentiments should be welcome news for companies as they seek greater adoption of automation to drive productivity and innovation. As we have known for quite some time, the success of organizations in the future will depend greatly on their ability to strike a balance between valuable human insight and interaction with technology.”

Randstad’s research also found US companies are bullish about the potential benefits of automation and AI on their business: 84% of U.S. respondents said they believe artificial intelligence and robotics will have a positive impact on the workplace in the next three to five years, and 31% of employers said they have increased their usage of automation/robotics in their business in the past 12 months.

The US research captures the views of more than 5,300 respondents through online interviews. The research, conducted since 2000, was done by Randstad’s international research partner Kantar TNS. Respondents for the 2017 research were polled from Nov. 25 through Dec. 15, 2016.
