Third of Canadians dissatisfied with their jobs, seeking new ones: Express Employment Professionals

August 25, 2023

A third of employed Canadian workers are currently seeking new roles due to dissatisfaction with career advancement opportunities and salary, according to a report by staffing firm Express Employment Professionals released on Aug. 23.

Better compensation and improved work/life balance are the top desired qualities, cited by 44% and 35% of the survey respondents, respectively.

The report, however, found that it may not be as easy for job seekers to find new employment compared to the previous few years; the majority of survey respondents said employers have the upper hand in the job market in general, and, more specifically, when it comes to salary negotiations.

“While the nation’s unemployment rate is still low, these survey results tell us the tight labor market could be easing to produce more balance between job openings and available workers,” Express Employment International CEO Bill Stoller said in a press statement. “However, there’s still work to be done to recruit top talent, and it appears salary, benefits and work/life balance are what employees are after.”

The survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of Express Employment Professionals between June 13 and June 26 among 507 Canadian adults who are employed or not employed but looking for work and looking for a new job.
