The number of gig economy, ridesharing drivers jumps 48.1% in Canada

The number of Canadians working as drivers for ridesharing apps such as Uber rose 48.1% over the past 12 months as of December 2023, Statistics Canada reported on Jan. 5. 

There were 135,000 Canadians between the ages of 16 and 69 providing services through the apps, up by 44,000 from a year ago.

In addition, the number of Canadians who provide delivery services through an app such as DoorDash rose by 19.2% to 272,000.

A majority of the rideshare and delivery drivers, 49.9%, were in Canada’s three largest metro areas — Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Landed immigrants accounted for 57.5% of the 365,000 people who provided either personal transport or delivery services through an app in the 12 months ending December 2023

The majority of personal transport and delivery service workers, 70.5%, also belonged to minority groups, the largest proportion of whom are South Asian (30.2%) and Black (10.3%) Canadians, according to the report by Statistics Canada.
