Staffing hours worked continue to hold steady in last week of May

Staffing hours worked continued to hold roughly stable for both professional and commercial occupations, according to the latest SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator released today for the week ended May 29. Volumes of business of business remain substantially above the corresponding week last year.

Hours worked in US commercial staffing rose 25% year over year in the week ended May 29 but were down 5% compared to the same week two years ago.

Meanwhile, professional staffing hours rose 45% year over year in the week ended May 29 and were up 30% compared to two years ago.

“A variety of economic and labor market data point to continued strength in the US economy, and we will be keenly watching as to whether temporary staffing volumes hold steady or expand further in the coming weeks,” according to the report.

The SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator measures hours worked. It comprises two sets of analyses: a year-over-year comparison showing how the most recent week compared to the same week 12 months previously and an indexed value that has been benchmarked against data from the week ended Jan. 19, 2019.

The indexed value was 101 in the week ended May 29, following readings of 101 and 102 in the prior two weeks.

Index values for the week ended May 29, by type of staffing:

  • Professional staffing: 123, following readings of 123 and 124 in the prior two weeks.
  • Commercial staffing: 89, up from readings of 90 in each of the prior two weeks.

Readings for the most-recent four weeks are subject to revision.
