South Dakota signs advance practice registered nurse compact

February 12, 2024

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed legislation that will allow advanced practice registered nurses who hold a multistate license to practice in the state, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing announced on Feb. 9. The compact was signed on Feb. 5.

South Dakota is the fourth jurisdiction to enact the APRN compact, joining Delaware, North Dakota and Utah, according to the NCSBN. The legislation will be implemented when seven states have enacted it.

According to the council, South Dakota’s bill was sponsored in both the state senate and house of representatives by lawmakers who are also advanced practice registered nurses and supported by the South Dakota Department of Health.

“As a rural state, healthcare workforce is a challenge and the adoption of this compact is a tool for supporting that workforce,” South Dakota Secretary of Health Melissa Magstadt said in a press release.
