Skills development is what new grads most look for in jobs, report says

November 06, 2017

The opportunity to develop their skills is the most important job factor for class of 2017 graduates who planned to enter the workforce immediately after graduation, according to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

NACE’s Class of 2017 Student Survey Report asked members of the class of 2017 to determine which among 18 aspects of a job or employer are most important. These students indicated that the opportunity to develop job-specific skills and the opportunity to develop applied skills — which are broader — are most important.

The top-10 factors students look for in a job include:

  1. Opportunity to develop job-specific skills: 84.0%
  2. Opportunity to develop applied skills: 82.6%
  3. Job security: 82.2%
  4. Friendly co-workers: 81.2%
  5. Good benefits package: 74.3%
  6. Recognition for good performance: 72.2%
  7. Clearly defined assignments: 69.6%
  8. Opportunity to improve the community: 68.5%
  9. Clear agenda of corporate social responsibility: 64.6%

The Class of 2017 Student Survey included 22,000 students, but the focus of this report are 4,213 bachelor's degree-level students who indicated they would be graduating, or who had already graduated, during the 2016-2017 academic school year. It was conducted from Feb. 15 to April 30, 2017.
