Self-employment increases during pandemic, share of women up sharply (St. Louis Federal Reserve)

July 11, 2022

The number of self-employed workers grew during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the share of women in self-employment, in particular, increased sharply during the Covid-19 recession, according to a blog post by the St. Louis Federal Reserve. As of February, 11% of US workers were self-employed. The St. Louis Federal Reserve noted the percentage of the workforce that was self-employed reached its highest level since August 2008, and self-employed workers will become even more relevant drivers of labor market dynamics as the gig economy continues to grow.
